Try not to repeat your mistakes -- surviving it the first time was probably just dumb luck, and nobody's dumb enough to do it twice.

It's a shame something like the "optical telegraph" discussed here has fallen into virtually forgotten history. It looks very simple from our 21st Century vantage point, but to someone in the 18th Century, it was cutting edge. We should remember things like this, both to show how far we've come and to remind us that sometimes we really haven't come all that far. We're not doing anything different from the way we used to, we're just doing it faster.

(Sometimes, if you click on this link, you'll get a 404 Error. Just come back to this page and click the link again. Since this is a BBC page, I assume it's just the British way of doing things.)
Obituary of Dame Anita Roddick, founder of The Body Shop.
I wasn't a customer of The Body Shop, but some of the women I've been involved with over the years were, and they swore by her products. They were high quality and their manufacture and testing were cruelty-free, a first in the cosmetics industry.
I first heard of Roddick while watching a segment about her on "60 Minutes." I was struck not only by her drive and intelligence, but her dedication to her principles and her ingenuity. When she first started The Body Shop and was making her products in her kitchen, she needed inexpensive containers. That quest led her to a medical supply company, and resulted in her first offerings being packaged in bottles intended for collecting urine samples.
It's unfortunate that someone like her is now gone, and equally unfortunate that there are not more like her around -- an entrepreneur with vision and conscience, whose business plan does not consist solely of grasping market share.

This is really shitty. Not only are gasoline prices in the U.S. getting to be more than many people can afford, now you can't even pay if you've got the money!

Phonecam recording of a recent performance in London. Low video quality and too much ambient noise, but Rie Fu's voice still comes through strong and clear. It's obvious she is a very talented singer, not one who needs to be rescued or enhanced in the mix. I like this particular video because it satisfies my passions for live music, the female voice, singer-songwriters, and Japanese women :)
Anime fans will recognize her from ending themes she did for the shows "Bleach," "Gundam Seed Destiny," and "Darker than Black."

I love cats. I've had a few over the years, and I've loved each of them as much as the dogs I had. But cats can be a bit of a nuisance, especially if you have too many. All of us know someone who's gone one kitty over the line, and what it's like when we go visit them. Here's a nice little treat to feed that feline overindulger.

I saw this a couple of weeks ago and it's been lingering in my mind ever since. The implicit sadness of the article really caught my attention. Japan has one of the highest suicide rates in the world, so something like this goes virtually unnoticed. An unfortunate example of Joseph Stalin's bitchy observation: "One death is a tragedy, a million is a statistic."
